Congratulations to CERTAIN Executive Committee Member and Lead Investigator Peter Tarczy-Hornoch, MD, FACMI, on being named Chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education at the University of Washington.
Dr. Tarczy-Hornoch remarks, “[there are] three powerful trends in biomedicine: (1) the explosion of biomedical data, knowledge and information, (2) the profound ongoing changes in the healthcare system, and (3) the need to train the next generation of healthcare providers in face of these trends. Biomedical Informatics by its very nature plays a key role in managing and leveraging the information explosion. Similarly, Medical Education by its nature is positioned to address emerging educational needs in Health Sciences education. Furthermore, since the changes to the healthcare system include mandated use of electronic medical records, the need to measure quality, cost-effectiveness, and the need to create a learning healthcare system that generates new knowledge as a byproduct of care it becomes clear Biomedical Informatics plays a vital role here as well.”
Dr. Tarczy-Hornoch has been instrumental in the design and deployment of CERTAIN’s data automation project to harness and leverage electronic medical record information and improve the timeliness and quality of data collection concerning surgical and interventional cases that are reported to SCOAP.
