In October, Dr. Varhese spoke to members of the Surgical Outcomes Club (SOC) about the development of Strong for Surgery and its potential to change clinical practice by preparing patients for surgery. Dr. Varghese explained the research basis for the creation of the four checklists, and the value each brings to clinicians and patients. Strong for Surgery began as a public health initiative for hospitals and clinics that perform colorectal, vascular, spine, and bariatric surgeries. Five hospitals in Washington State were chosen as pilot sites for implementation, a comprehensive process designed for the distinct environment of each site. The presentation also noted implications for improving surgical outcomes and the research benefits of ongoing patient data collection.
